THE MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ARTS
201 EAST TWENTY-FOURTH STREET BRIDGEPORT 4256
MINNEAPOLIS 4, MINNESOTA

RUSSEL A. PLIMPTON, DIRECTOR

July 18, 1952

Dear Germain:

I think that I was exceedingly lucky to catch you with my letters of July 11 and 14, while you were still in New York. As a matter of fact, I hope, for selfish reasons, that you are still there and can persuade Ethlyne to lend the Winterhalter.

Plans for the exhibition are taking shape very nicely. We have secured the great Titian from the Nelson Gallery of Art, and a number of old masters of equal quality. We now want to bring up the nineteenth century field to a similar level and are confident of securing first rate examples by David, Delacroix, Manet, etc. However, since portrait painting is the theme of the exhibition, it is of utmost importance to us to secure a Winterhalter, and furthermore, an example as brilliant as yours.

Therefore, I do hope that you will substitute something else from your rich collection on your wall and agree to lend the Winterhalter, which as you will remember, has always been a favorite of mine, and which, I know, will attract considerable attention here.

I trust that you and Ethlyne will have a fine time in the Virgin Islands. Phyllis and I are planning to fly by "air coach" to London, Paris, and Madrid for three or four weeks, returning to New York
