Atlanta Geo. Jan 26th 1866

General: I presume to write you this letter and I hope you will excuse me for troubling you even if you can not grant the favor asked. I had the honor of being introduced to you at Milledgeville during the Session of the Convention by Mr. Henry G Cole of Marietta, and though you doubtless recollect Mr. Cole as one of the truly loyal men of Georgia yet I have no reasons for supposing you recollect me. I removed recently from Cass County to this City to practice Law.

The object of this letter is to ask of you the appointment of Mr. E D Cheshire of Marietta to the position of Agent for your Bureau for the County of Cobb. The County of which Marietta is the County Site. His financial condition no matter how embarrassing adds nothing to his claims, therefore I say nothing about his difficulties in supporting a family. His moral standing and disposition to measure out even handed justice to all parties can not be surpassed, and make him eminently suited for the Agency. Should you appoint him I assure you he would permit no contract signed up before him which would be illiberal and unjust to the Freedman; no prejudiced judgements would be made by him. He would perform his duties faithfully and conscientiously.

I was well known to Gen Steadman and Gen Sevenson and were either of them in the State I would refer you to them. As they are gone I enclose you two papers from which you can learn something of me.

Very Respectfully &c Henry P Farrow
