Carpet weaving developed in Armenian highlands of Mesopotamia
Tradition of carpet weaving
- Grandmothers would babysit grandchildren and tell stories while weaving
Parents
- As grandchildren got older they would begin helping grandmother weave carpets
- Children would then express in taking on craft at puberty and parents would buy loom for child to begin experimenting
- If parents approved of skills & design they would host a carpet cutting ceremony
- Silk weaving tradition on display came from weavers from Istanbul who began teaching Armenians following Soviet era
- Traditionally fathers would cut the rug since they were ones to tie first piece to the loom
- Carpets traditionally gifted to kings
