John W. Beatty, Esq.,
Director of Fine Arts, Carnegie Institute,
Pittsburgh, Pa.

Dear Sir:--
Replying to your letter of August 31st, earlier answer to which has been delayed by a pressure of other matters, I must beg you to excuse me from loaning the pictures asked for. I had received several requests to loan for other exhibitions the paintings you desire, prior to the receipt of your communication. In view of the fact that they have already been away from home so long, and for various other reasons, I cannot, I regret to say, accommodate you at this time.
Yours very truly,
Charles L Freer
