Dear Mr. Bixby:--

I have your kind note of the 25th instant, enclosing correspondence concerning the engravings owned by Mrs. L. G. Parish. I judge from Mr. Hodges' letter that they are early line engravings, and if they are such they would not be of special interest to me. A number of years ago, I used to collect early line engravings, but I found their pleasure rather fleeting, so I gave up buying them, and since that time have confined my collecting of prints to those of the painter etchers and the woodblock prints of the Japanese. I return herewith the letters from Mr. Hodges and Mrs. Parish.

I am delighted with the success you are having in securing such a remarkable lot of original manuscripts and rare books. I am sure you will never regret having made such splendid purchases. Pardon me for suggesting it, but don't you think you ought to have a fire-proof room or vault in which to keep your special treasures? Ever since I was last at your house, and saw your very interesting things, I have been impressed by the danger you run of fire.
