My dear Sir:--

I have been spending the last two weeks in Boston, Washington and New York, and while in the latter city on Friday last, the 8th instant, I received a letter from our mutual friend, Mr. Whistler, telling me that you had decided to sell "The Thames in Ice" and the small water colour, "Mrs. Whibley", both by Mr. Whistler, and he recommended that I cable you promptly, inquiring price, etc., which I at once did, as follows:--

"Cowan, Edinburgh. Cable for prompt acceptance lowest cash price Whistler's "Thames in Ice" and "Mrs. Whibley". Whistler my reference."
signed,Freer.

A couple of hours later, your cablegram came, reading:--

"Freer, Waldorf, N. Y. "Thames in Ice" two thousand pounds. "Mrs. Whibley" four hundred. London price. Wrote you first November."
signed,Cowan.
