It would in my opinion be a wise measure if some suitable person in the locality mentioned be designated to act as the friend of the freedmen

This application is for additional bounty under the act of July 28th 1866. Both admit having received the original bounty of one hundred dollars, although in the case of Pierson it is not noted on his discharge Geo S. Smith Bvt Major Sub Comr |

| 53/[[4?]] | Continuation of Endorsement on communication from I. E. Stewart Esq. stating that business pertaining to the Freedmen's Bureau, was turned over Sometime last winter, to the Mayor of Corinth &c. S-10-FBDC-1866 Head Quars Dist of Miss Bureau R.F & A.L. Vicksburg Jany 3d 1866
Respectfully returned to Major Smith. If it can be shown that the person so turning over the business of the Bureau to the Mayor of Corinth had the proper authority so to do and the proper papers or orders can be produced, the matter will be taken into consideration. No record appears in this office of any such transfer of Authority.
It cannot be seen why the Freedmen are not as much under the protection of the Municipal executive officer and authority in Corinth as in any other city-or village in the State, and certainly no reason can be seen why extra remuneration should be asked of the General Government. for protecting a portion of the citizens of his community
