"G." 3. B.F.B.D.C.1867

Bureau Refugees Freedmen &c
Office Sub Commissioner
Columbus Miss Feb 4th 1867.

Respectfully released to Major A.W. Preston A A A G, with the remark that the authority of no one was consulted in reporting the burning of this building, although I will say, considerable effort was made to prevent the fact from going abroad

The affair was investigated by a Committee of Citizens and the fact established that the fire did not have its origin in the room occupied that night by the freedmens aid society. The only one in which there had been fire since the friday preceding & where it was hoped to prove the fire originated.

I do not believe doubt is entertained by any here, not opposed to the education of freedmens by Northern Teachers, but that the fire was the work of an incendiary

Section 16, Paragraph 2, last line before title block, I think it says "report", as last line of the next paragraph also has a more clearly defined example of "report". Please confirm this.
