My dear Matsuki:--

I wired you the latter part of last week, concerning the Whistler photographs, and at once gave orders to the Photographer here, who originally made the negatives of "The Balcony" and "Bognor", to furnish as early as possible one copy each of the two pictures. They are received this morning, but are truly sickening in condition. I have never seen anything worse in photography that I can recall, and I am sending them on to you just as they are. I think you had better take them to you printer, and consult with him about them. If he can reproduce them with anything like justice to the original pictures, you may let him do so, but I think he will agree with me that they are hopeless. Now, I am sending the photographs by first mail, and my suggestion is that you give attention to the matter instantly. Your printer will, doubtless, tell you that he can do nothing with the photographs, and upon receipt of such information, if you will kindly telegraph me, I will have other photographs made by some other photographer, and get proofs thereof to you as early as possible, which will probably be toward the latter part of this week.
