My dear Mr. Low:-

I have been laid up with rheumatic pains much of my time during the last four or five weeks, and my correspondence has consequently suffered considerable delay. To-day, I am less a sufferer, and am glad of a chance to reply to your letter of the 6th instant. 
The little book followed your letter closely, and I was pleased to know that it had given pleasure to Mrs. Low and yourself. Hewlett knows Tuscany, and treats it as sympathetically as Berenson dies the early painters of the same sunny land-- and that is saying a great deal.
It was kind of you to think of me in connection with Mr. Bacher's desire to dispose of his rare proofs of Mr. Whistler's etchings. If Mr. Bacher will send the proofs to me on approval, I will examine them most carefully, and if I find that they are finer or rarer than similar impressions already in my collection, I will, doubtless, purchase them.
