39 at the Century. Five new members were elected out of a list of more than a hundred applicants. I was gratified to all that character alone recommended a man and that wealth and family connection alone only produced smiles, as the letters were read. We were laboriously occupied until past midnight and I think we elected five desirable men. The next day (Saturday)were were invited to dine at John Platts where we very much wished to go. Unfortunately I had one of my severe head-aches and we were obliged to send word we could not go. On Thursday I sent a note to each artist in the building inviting him to come and see, for this free and frank criticism, my last picture, (not entirely completed) "Sea from Shore." Nearly every one came between 11 and 12 and it proved a pleasant occasion. I gave them each a good cigar and tried to make them feel that I should like their comments which I think they gave freely. Saturday. Feb. 8. I sent my picture to the club last Saturday night and it seems too have attracted considerable attention. Many spoke to me in commendation of it and I have reason to be pleased with its reception. On Tuesday evening we attended a reception at the opening of the galleries of the Water Color Society at the academy where was also the collection brought over by Mr. Blackburne. From the necessarily hasty glance I got I was not impressed with the English part. It does not fairly represent them I think. Thursday I went to hear Parke Godwin lecture at the academy. His lecture was excellent and I wish he would do more in the same direction. I afterwards attended a reception at the Circadian Club, which was very crowded and very miscellaneous as to the company although many distinguished persons were present. Friday evening Gifford dined with us and invited us to go to Wallachs to see Sothern in "Sam" which I think is not so good as his Dundreary. It has been warm and springlike today. I walked up to
