Whittredges little daughter 16 months old died this (Wednesday) afternoon. I went up yesterday to enquire about it and met Whittredge who seemed very anxious. It will be a severe blow to him at his time of life. I went up there this morning to see if I could do anything. Whittredge and Gifford had gone up to Woodlawn Cemetery but I saw Mrs. Whittredge and she showed me her dead child. Poor woman she has had many sorrows and bears them with great bravery.

Friday March 21. Nett Sterling brought me tickets for Miss Faithfuls readings at the Steinway Hall last evening. It rained but I went and found no one there but Miss Faithfull. After a little Mrs. Bullard & Mrs. Moullon came and then Nett Sterling & Miss Bragg. Altogether there were not more than fifty people, but it was decided that we should all sit in the front seats and that the readings should go on. Nett sang three times and Miss Faithfull read her selections and altogether it was quite pleasant.

Saturday Mar. 22. The great event of the day the execution of [[Ferter?]] occurred yesterday. Governor Dix I think has the support of the best sentiment in refusing to interfere with the sentence. I attended the funeral of Whittredges little baby yesterday. Gifford and I went with him to Woodlawn Cemetery. In the evening I went to a very nice party at Mrs. Bullards. Mr. & Mrs. Rumple were there whom I had not seen for four or five years. I was also introduced to Kate Field and to Mrs. Bradley. Kate Field said she had been in my studio several times. Miss Nelly Hutchinson was there. Mrs. Louise Chandler Moulton to whom the party was given, Mr. & Mrs. H. M. Field, Stedman, Whitelaw Reid, the inevitable Swayne Gifford, Col. Hay and several others.

Monday Mar. 24. Although I had a headache on Saturday I forced myself to go around to the sale of Mogier's statues. There were not many people present but the
