eleven works brought about $7000 which was more than I feared they would. I came home and went to bed with my head aching violently and about 11 o'clock was obliged to get up and sit with my feet in hot water until 2 o'clock with a raging head ache after which I went to bed and got asleep.

Sunday evening Gertrude who has not been out of the house in three weeks went with me up to Prof. Chandlers where we met about twenty people and spent a very pleasant evening. Today I went to work on a little picture of the Arch of Nero but did not come out with it as well as I could have wished. We had a letter from Maurice which treated of home matters and conveyed more unpleasant news of the struggles up there. The Kensett sale commenced this evening which I attended. The total of the evenings sale was 11.0 pictures 19.440. frames 1968.42 total/21.408.42 which was doing remarkably well.

Sunday March 30. Thursday we had a reception in the afternoon and evening to which a great many people came, a large proportion ladies. I dont think many who buy pictures came and I am more and more convinced that they do is no good. Friday I worked on my Arch of Nero and improved. I got a nice letter from Booth from Chicago in which he tells me he has given up the management of his theatre to his brother Junius. Eastman Johnson came in and I went up to his house with him. Just after we had gone Tom Appleton came in and made a long call on Gertrude. Saturday I worked on my "Arch of Nero" It rained all day violently. Eastman Johnson and his wife dined with us. I received a letter from Bayard Taylor from Florence. They are living at the Cara Guidi where we were while we were in Florence.

Friday Apl. 4" 1873 I spent the evening last Sunday at Thompsons with Mr & Mrs Joy Mr & Mrs Rood, Eastman Johnson and his wife and Mrs Joumans. Gertrude was not well enough to go. Monday I sent my pictures
