told him I had painted his wife in the picture and as she is not an houri he fancied it was done to ridicule her. He evidently had no idea what I was about and fancied a joke at his expense under my operations. Loving Brace came today from the Adirondacs. Will Radford left by the day boat. Received a letter from Whittredge in which he acquiesces in my suggestions. Feels better and means to stay in that region. Think he may come down to Shokan. 

Sunday Sept. 7, 1873. Mary, Sara, Gertrude and I took a ride this afternoon around by Steep Rocks and the river road and to home by the Flat-bush road. I wrote to Whittredge and told him if he came to Shokan I thought I would join him in at least two weeks. John Olmstead, Mary & Marian go home tomorrow, and me to Church's

Wednesday Sept. 17, 1873. Returned from Churchs today, leaving Gertrude to go home with Mary Gifford to remain until Saturday. Had a very pleasant visit at Churchs and most delightful weather. I made a few sketches. Lockwood DeForest was there. Church has a very lame wrist which I think is very serious and I think he is troubled about. He has on his card a large picture of minis, mainly completed for a Mr. Joy of Chicago. As soon as I reached home commenced getting ready to go out to join Whittredge at Deans Corners. Found a letter here from him in which he expresses fear that I may not like it out there. Wrote to Gertrude and to Vaux.

Sunday Oct. 19" 1873. I returned last evening from Deans Corners where I went on Sept 18" to join Whittredge for an autumn sketching. Whittredge was much out of health when I first went out, a rain storm set in and I was very undecided about remaining. However I thought it would be unwise to come back without investigating the region and the result was that we found it an exceedingly interesting place. We went directly to work, the autumn colors soon began to show and we never lacked for subjects. The streams are charming and the meadows which in summer are almost inaccessible in summer for their rank growth were as beautiful as anything could be. I made almost twenty sketches in all and the most of them are things which I think I will be pretty sure to sell. We had an excellent
