published in the Freeman. There were some prolonged stops which it seems to me might be dispensed with. It grew very cold Sunday and I returned Monday on the Hudson River road. In the evening went to Mr. Cranes to call on Mrs. Sawyer and found Alice & Mr Sawyer there. I arranged with Mrs. Sawyer and Alice to go to Rondout this week Recd a long letter from Bayard Taylor in which he gives me a confidential relation of some of his trials. He is going to Egypt this winter. Ward and Whittredge called to talk about the Academy

Tuesday 27. Whittredge came in to tell me that he had a little daughter born last night. Mr. Hedian an art dealer from Baltimore called and after speaking in a very flattering manner of my work ended by offering me $150 for a picture I ask $300 for. A headache which I have been expecting a long time culminated today. I sat in hot water from 2 o'clock until 9 am then went to bed in sheer despair to suffer intense pain until 4 o'clock when I got a little sleep.

Wednesday 28. A rainy day. The weather is as fickle as it can be. Have felt very badly all day. After breakfast went up to Eastmans to see him on perspective and after I got back worked a little. Mrs Stone took her picture today. I did not see her. I believe it is to be given to Col. Hay for a wedding present. He is to be married in Cleveland. Fitch, Hall, Gifford and I dined in Fitchs room after which I came to my room and wrote to Gertrude. Guy came in today. My little figure was on the easel. He looked at it but made no remark. J. S. Brown came in and was apparently interested in it and spoke very pleasantly of it. Perhaps Guy didnt know I did it, or perhaps it didnt please him. I dont think he ever does such things maliciously.

Thursday 29. Went out and did some errands this morning and not yet feeling quite well. Ordered a canvas 24 x 42 for my Academy picture. Mrs. Sawyer came in to tell me she and Alice would go up to Rondout tomorrow. Mr. Moore called. Wants more pictures. Showed him my figures which seemed to surprise him very much. Wants me to send my last landscape up to his room on Saturday to show to some gentlemen who are coming to see one of Eastman Johnsons. Just before he left Mr. Hedian came in and took my little winter picture "Saturday Afternoon" for $200 without frame. Have worked the most of the day on my Solitaire. Took it up in the parlor where I had plenty of room to manage
