themselves up as authorities the moment they buy a few pictures. I have met with instances of this kind which were too offensive to be borne and have incurred the charge of being a churlish fellow because I would not quietly listen to it. My little model was to have come today but he disappointed me and I had hoped to finish the picture. I had a great piece of good luck today. I was looking over some papers in my pocket book and came across a hundred dollar bank note which I had entirely overlooked. I have just finished Blacks last novel "A Princess of Thule" a charming story the scene of which is laid in the Hebrides. I am reading now "The Initials" by the Baroness Tautphoeus.

Wednesday Mar. 25" 1874. The wind blew a gale today. I had set it apart to go down town to buy some mill boards to paint upon and started out immediately after breakfast. After looking in at several places I finally found what I wanted and bought 50 sheets which I had cut in various sizes and made an arrangement to have them sent up to Pearse and Woodwards paint shop to have them prepared when I stopped on my way down town and arranged with them to paint them for me. I felt very much relieved after I had accomplished all this. I went and bought a hundred cigars in South St, called at my Uncle Charles' office who was not in and then came home with my eyes full of dust and a bad feeling in my head. Dr. Otis came in in the afternoon and showed me some very ingenious surgical instruments he had invented and had made. Tom Sawyer spent the evening with us.

Thursday 26. I awoke with a headache, in fact was conscious of a bad feeling in my head all night. By noon had to put my feet in hot water. Meantime Joe Tribly called but I could not see him. After a lunch and a cup of strong coffee I gradually grew better and by three o'clock my head ache had nearly left me. Weir came and brought his picture of the "Confessional" which he has in Fitch's room. Gertrude and I went in to see it. I liked it much better than I feared I should. I think it an exceedingly good picture. From there we went to Giffords room, to Whittredges and to Hubbards.

Friday 27. I sent my pictures to the Academy today. Four in all. "Cape Ann" 24 x 42 for sale. price $1250. "Deans
