128 after theirs came with Mr Dean and his partner Mr Jewett to look at my last picture. They staid half an hour looking at all my pictures but finally went away without saying anything about buying. I was a little disappointed but not much, as I don't count on these things as I used to. Mrs. Beirstadt made me a very pleasant visit. They have been living in the country all winter and I have a fancy that Beirstadts declining popularity begins to make them feel like seeking out their old friends. She looked very young and pretty and I was glad to see her. Mrs Sloane (Millie Johnson) called with her little boy and she and Gertrude and I had a nice talk together. Their gave us this morning an interesting account of his call on Mr O. Roberts and R. L. Stuart to get pictures for his coming exhibition. He says Roberts house is knee deep in pictures from cellar to garret and that he even has them in his stable. He is going to build a large gallery this summer. I wrote home today that we would come up tomorrow to spend sunday. It is raining tonight but I hope it will be over before we start. Monday May 18. 1874 We have just returned from home where we went on Saturday. Sunday was a charming spring day. Sara, Gertrude, Maurice and I took a nice ride on the Flatbush road. We found cousin Charlie McEntee there on Saturday when we arrived. We came home today by the Hudson River Road. It has rained most of the day. We went up by the Wallkill Valley. The town seems stale and I only wish we were going back tomorrow to remain. Wednesday 20 Col. Hay came in on Saturday with Miss Stone to buy the little study of my late Autumn with figures and was much disappointed that I had sold it to Mr. Hedrian. Mr Walker the gentleman to whom Church wrote about my late Autumn came in yesterday and looked at all my pictures and as we were under the impression that Church had gone to Hartford he proposed to come in tomorrow. However calling on Heade we found Church had not gone and he and Mr. Walker soon returned and he finally took my picture for $600 including the frame which will cost $50. Today Gertrude and I have been buying some necessary things preparatory to going home for the summer. Mrs. Church called to see us this morning. Gertrude bought a belt and nut picks and nut cracker for Lucy and sent them today.
