Office Freedmens Bureau
Leon County July 13th 1866

General

I have the honor to report to you that the crops of corn and cotton are unusually promising in my district, in fact fully as good as in former years when the negro was forced to work from fear of the lash, of course the bottom lands that have been inundated by the overflow of the Trinity river present an unpromising appearance at this time - much praise has been extended to the Freedmen for their continued labor after so much disaster, (as an overflow,) I am pleased to inform you that Capt. Bradford has extended to me every assistance, which has had a very happy effect upon the Freedmen, and his course has been fully approved by the good citizens. Capt. Bradford coming here has had a fine influence upon the community in general. He has made several attempts to arrest R.O. Lusk, but as yet, has failed to do so. Capt. Bradford informed me on yesterday that the civil authorities had held the parties to bail for their appearance at the next District Court for their assault upon me.

I am happy to inform you that the Freedmen in my district are doing well. I trust General you will not leave this section without some troops, as for, the present- it is necessary for the protection of the Freedmen they should be here.

I am General, Very Respectfully,
Your Ob'dt. Servt.
