I have the honor to report to you that Capt I H Bradford informed me on the 15 inst that he was prepared to make arrests of the parties by whom I have been assaulted, I requested him at present, to make no arrests, as I had not yet been able to collect sufficient proff, to insure their convicion of a serious & premeditated outrage before a military commission. The great opposition to the Freedmans Bureau in this section causes, even, good Citizens, to sympathise with Bad Men. I returned home, regardless of the reports, that reached me, on my arrival at Capt Whiteside, and was at my post one week, before Capt Bradford reached there, I was called on by the Chief Justice and other influential citizens of the county, who assured me of protection there has been a powerful reaction in my favor, as evidence of it, a petition was endeavored to be got up against
