I have the honor to apply for an appointment as Captain of Infantry.

I entered the service as 2nd Lieut of the 21. Ills. vol. Infantry May 7, 1861, and serving until May 1862 in South Eastern Missouri and in Arkansas under Gen. Steele - was present at the engagement at Frederickton Mo. Oct 1861. 

In May 1862 with my regiment joined the army before Corinth - [[strikethrough]] in August [[/strikethrough]] my regiment being assigned to Division of Gen. J. C. Davis marched from Jacinto Miss. to join the army [[strikethrough]] the army [[/strikethrough]] of the Cumberland commanded by Gen Buell, making the campaign through Tennessee and Kentucky and taking part in the Battle of Perryville.

In Novr. 1862 was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and [[strikethrough]] was [[/strikethrough]] assigned to duty with the Pioneer Brigade Brig Gen Jas. St. Clair Morton Comdg - of which Brigade I was Inspector and Provost Marshall, taking part in the battles of Murfreesboro Dec 31 1862 Chickamauga and Mission Ridge; was promoted to Captain July 1 1864 [[strikethrough]] and in [[/strikethrough]]
