I have the honor to submit the following report in regard to a case in Limestone County, as follows
I was called on by Mr. I.T. Austin of said County who was requested by the Freedmen interested to lay their case before me, saying that they were being swindled out of their cotton by their Employers and requesting that I should come to Springfield and investigate the case, and find it as follows. The Plantation was purchased by a Mr. Love & Co. on Credit, the payments to be made this spring. The said Love & Co. contracted with the Freedmen for half the crop, there was about One hundred & twenty five Bales raised. Of said cotton ninety One Bales has been shipped and in the hands of the Creditors, Thirty-six Bales to W.T. Austin & Co. at Houston or to Moody & Co. subject to the order of Austin & Co. the remaining Fifty-five was shipped to Mess Iglehart & Co. out of that Ninety one Bales, forty-five and a half
