Bales belong to the Freedmen, but of their half no account of the same has been made to them, and the cotton is in the hands of the Creditors of Love & Co. I found fourteen Bales packed and baled at the Gin, and about twenty more ungined which I took possession of in the name of the Freedmen, but it is not sufficient to pay them their just proportion of the Crop, there being about Thirty-four Bales only, when their part of the Crop should be Sixty-two and one half Bales. The firm of Love & Co. have a/c's [accounts] against the cropers, of said a/c's I send you a fair specimen. I also enclose the Weights of Bales shipped, and request orders in the premises. Limestone to Freestone Counties are as good cotton Counties as any in this State- raising between 5 & 6 thousand Bales of cotton. As far as I can learn there has been no settlement with Freedmen, that is those who labored for a portion of the Crop, and I would suggest that I may be ordered to change my Hd. Qrs. from Waco to Springfield for the period of two weeks to protect the Freedmen in their rights and see that they are dealt justly with in their settlements.
