Short time, and we wish to make this application in behalf of our client and if possible prevail upon you, to permit Lt Horne to turn over Mr Priestly to the Civil Courts, that his case may be there tried; and we hope we will not give offence to you in making this application, and making this request, as we know no other means to accomplish what we desire than by addressing you in this manner.
We believe that under the present system of organizing the jurors there can be no doubt but what ample justice will be meted out to this man in our Court. in fact the Courts of our County are constantly bringing cases in which white men are charged with committing offenses on the freed people, and so far as we know the bureau agent here has not thought it necessary to interpose and take cases out of the hands of Civil officers and to turn them over to military commissions, and we cannot see why this case cannot be entrusted to the courts for adjudication.
