within statements is all false. Ben Roan + his brother William, also Bens Wife, son and daughter, were not arrested on suspicion, but on the learned evidence. The articles which they stole from Mr. South were found at his place, behind the smokehouse nobody could ride by there, as no road leads by. Mr. Souths coat was in Bens room, we found a sack of coffee, which William alleges he brought from Galveston is also stolen from Saber & Luce here and had their name on it. We found several pairs of shoes saved up in a bedsack, stolen from Mr. Wheat by whom Ben was employed, and many other articles, recognized by persons as their property. Ben employs a man to work his corn patch about 1/2 acre and pay him $15.00/100 per month? He has told me that he know the man that stole my watch & money about 6 weeks ago. His cabin is a den of thieves and by their nefarious transactions. These miscreants have injured the whole collored population of this place.
