London, England.

Gentlemen:--

Your cablegram cam this morning, reading:--
"Can sell you Whistler's famous full-length portrait of Irving as Philip of Spain, six thousand pounds here. Please cable if you want it.
Dowdeswell, Chiaroschro, London."

As I do not desire to purchase this picture, I am sending a written reply, instead of a telegraphic one.

I know the portrait very well, having seen it not only in Sir Henry Irving's own apartments, but also in the Edinburgh Memorial Exhibition recently closed. It is, of course, a beautiful work of art, but not one that I should care to add to my collection.

Thank you for your kindness in the matter, I remain,
Yours very sincerely,
Charles L. Freer
