that on account of Lauras illness she could not leave or at least for not more than a day and if she would let us know when Ecosura would be there I and perhaps both of us would come up for a day. Laura continues very ill but Sara thinks she is a little better today. Maurice torments us in the midst of all our other anxieties and I do not know what to do with him - Gertrude and I called on Mr. Lindsley this evening, and his sister Mrs. Catlin who is making him a visit.

Thursday Sept. 29. 1876. I slept but little last night on account of anxiety about Maurice. I determined to talk with him and I could not get to sleep for thinking what I should say to him. After breakfast I called him out back of the house and had a long talk with him, but not a very satisfactory one. I fear he is beyond all help. He did promise me he would stay at home and not go down the hill, but he did go all the same. I told him the doors would not be left unlocked for him and the servants had been told that they need not get up for him, and if he was not in when we retired he would have to remain out. He was not violent as I feared he might be. Oh! what a trouble he is to us and how powerless we are to do any thing - Laura seems no better but Sara says is no worse. Downing came unexpectedly while we were at tea on his way from Albany where he has been on business. I hear nothing further from Church nor from Sarony. I spend my time working about the place to keep the days from being a burden. I long for my studio and wonder if I will be any happier after I get there. I hope to when I get to work. I wrote to Mrs. Winter today that I was coming down on Monday.

Sunday Oct 1. 1876. Attended the funeral of John Vanderlyn Jr. in company with my father. He died on Thursday I think and was 71 years old, older than I thought. He lived with his sisters in an old fashioned house cor of Fair & John Sts (I think) In the room where I was were sketches by the elder Vanderlyn his uncle. One I think must have been the original design for his Marius, in Sepia. We went to the cemetery. He was buried by the Masons near the elder Vanderlyn
