Friday Dec. 19" 1876. Booth sat for me today and gave me his check for $2000 anticipating the payment of the character pictures and relieving me of a world of anxiety regarding obligations coming due. He is a most generous and sympathetic fellow and I am so glad he is pleased with the pictures I am doing. Attended the sale of John Tayler Johnston's pictures at Chickering Hall. The total of the evenings sale was $140,000. My little picture which he bought for $150 he sold for $400. The weather is very cold.

Wednesday 20. Booth sat or rather stood for Shylocke. He is pleased with the beginning but I don't think I got along well. Deposited my check today and went down to Fulton St. to order my shoes of my shoemaker. Met John McEntee who is here settling up his fathers affairs. Mr. Hoe called to see about a small picture for a friend. Wants my Autumn Idyl & I didn't ask so much for it. Called with Mr. Bayard Taylor on Miss Annie Lee who is painting  Genl. Dix. I was very much pleased with her. She paints remarkably well but the generals figure struck me as very badly drawn. Burger and I go up tomorrow and I shall not return until after Christmas.

Tuesday 26. Burger & I went to Rondout on Thursday by the 7.15 train and attended the representation of "Belschaggen" in the evening and again on Friday evening. It snowed violently on Friday evening and the house was not full. It was very creditably done however and gave general satisfaction. I have been very glad to be at home so long. The Christmas was not as happy and hopeful as last year but full of troubles and anxieties. I gave my father $300 to pay some
