spare room and I spent the afternoon putting in some glass. Maurice has gone off rather underhandedly and filled us all with anxiety and apprehension Gertrude received a paper from Mrs. Bachelder containing a notice of her Mothers death. May Gifford wrote to say that she could not come to visit us at present as they have company there. She says the last they heard of Sanford he was at "no=mans=land" an island I believe somewhere near Martha's Vineyard.
   
Monday Mar. 7. 1877. Went to New York last Thursday and remained until Monday. Coale and his wife and daughter were in town. Breakfasted with them on Friday and had them to lunch at my studio same day which was very stormy. Called on Weir & has wife who were in town. Lieut. Pitcher from Audrews Company called on me. Invited him to the club but he did not come. Monthly meeting of the club Saturday night. Weir breakfasted with me Sunday morning and his brother Julian also just returned from Paris. Weir and I dined at Pinchots and I came home with the 11.30 train. Yesterday and today I have been trying to paint something but I seem utterly unable to invent anything. I am almost in despair and I seem to grow more and more incompetent. 

Saturday 10". Tuesday was election day. We had the first serious frost of the season that morning and since it has been very mild. I have tried a success of one today but with indifferent success. This week I have been trying to work but I am very unhappy. I think I have some dyspepsia. I am greatly worried about the future.
