sick and I might have spared myself the whole of it. Gertrude wrote Mrs. Halleck a note regarding Mrs. Danby last week on information furnished by Julia Dillon. It has been misunderstood and has given Gertrude great trouble. She today wrote her an explanatory note. It is cold today and it is snowing now (4. P.M.) We spent the evening at John McEntees last night very pleasantly.

Wednesday Nov 14. 1877. Yesterdays Tribune contained the announcement of the death of Henry Peters Gray on Sunday night. I saw him at the Club on the Saturday evening a week previous and spoke to him. He seemed as well as usual and I was shocked to hear of his death. His funeral occurred on Tuesday at 4 P.M. I think I would have gone down had I known it in time.
I think his death must be a relief to his family for Mrs. Gray told us last winter of the trouble he caused them. His mind was much affected and from being a kind and tender husband and father he had grown suspicious and tyrannical.

[[clipping]] FUNERAL OF HENRY PETERS GRAY.

The funeral services of Henry Peters Gray were held at 4o’clock yesterday afternoon in the Church of All Souls, at Fourth-ave. and Twentieth-st. The Rev. Dr. Bellows officiated; but, according to the wish of the deceased gentlemen, did not deliver any sermon. Mr. Gray, sometime previous to his death, expressed a desire that his funeral ceremonies should be as simple as possible. In compliance with this request, no floral offerings were sent, and the remains were enclosed in a very plain rosewood coffin, which bore the inscription, “Henry Peters Gray. Died, November 12, 1877, aged fifty-eight.’, The pall-qearers were Bayard Taylor, Daniel Huntington, Henry K. Brown, John Durand, Sandford R. Gifford, Charles L. Tiffany, T. Addison Richards and E. D. E. Greene. The body was allowed to remain in the church last night, and will be taken this morning to Greenwood Cemetery. Nearly all the prominent artists of the city were present at the ceremonies yesterday, and many of them will accompany the remains to the grave. [[/clipping]]

Thursday 15. I received a letter from Booth from Louisville and one from Gussie. Wrote to Booth last evening.
Friday 16. Have been painting or trying to paint some studies for pictures for some tie past but do not succeed and am greatly troubled about my inability to produce anything now when everything depends upon me. We took a ride this afternoon over the creek and called on Capt. [[Audurus?]] on our return. It has been a magnificent day with fine cloud effects. The skies opposite the sun were particularly fine today. I am very fond of these effects and mean to try to paint an important picture of something of this kind.
