excited our suspicions by his officiousness called today. He wanted to borrow twenty-five dollars, which I did not lend. Stone from Kaatskill called to refresh himself as he said by seeing something as he had seen no pictures in a long time. He apparently was not refreshed by any of mine as he did not condescend to speak of them and I had several of my best ones here. An artist from Cincinnatti called. I did not learn his name.

Thursday Jan 3.
I went home a week ago on Saturday and did not return until yesterday. The weather has been charming but I have been full of anxiety. Our taxes and interest are due and we have nothing to meet them with Mrs. Pychonska brought Mr. Dodd over today to see my picture. He seemed to like it but talked of another one that he had seen. He is going to try to bring Mrs. Dodd over to see it but she is an invalid and there is no telling when she will come or whether she will like it if she sees it. I hope he will buy it but it is only a hope and meanwhile I try hard to be contented and hopeful. Mrs. Stella Coen died yesterday morning at 3'oclock. Sara went down to see about her as she had been very ill, and returned just before I left. Although expected it saddened us all. I came from home very reluctantly leaving them at home to their anxieties but bringing mine with me. I had written a letter to Gussie and one to
