to recross the bar and she came to anchor and after dinner politely furnished to all of us we dispersed ourselves as well as we could for the night. The lodgers mostly got staterooms but the gentlemen took to the lounges. Fortunately I had two overcoats and was quite comfortable. The result was the ship returned to Staten Island with the high tide and about 7 o'clock one small steamer which had remained inside Sandy Hook came up and brought us to the city. An elaborate collation had been provided the day before but of course it was not needed but this Friday Apr 12 morning we had high tea arriving and other refreshments. Mr. Shoemaker the German Consul General, Mr. Meyer and others connected with the line were most kind and hospitable and Capt. Brandt kept up his amiability through this whole delay and serene trial to his patience. We got home a little after 8 and the steamer cannot sail until noon today. Among the passengers were Mark Twain & wife and Murat Halstead and family. Taylor was pretty well used up and we did not see him this morning. The rest today will be grateful.

Sunday 14. Went to see Butler Friday who gave me his check to meet my note due tomorrow. Saturday Gertrude and I went to the Union League Club to see the pictures. I sent the "Mists of the morning" It was in a dark place and did not look well but I noticed that everyone looked at it and were evidently interested. We called at the Thurbers but they were out. In the evening went to see the Cottier pictures which are to be sold. Very curious and strange but certainly interesting. One side of art. Met John Taylor Johnson who asked me about our excursion down the bay with Taylor. Just then Sherman came up. He Johnson in the worst taste and with his usual lack of tact remarked
