Saturday Dec. 7. 1878. Painted on the little picture all forenoon and have nearly completed it. After dinner Mary and I took a walk over on the Vlightbergh [[Vlightberg]]. It froze hard last night and has thawed but little all day. A new interest manifested itself to me today. Is it to last? What is to be its result? Sunday 8. Lucy came to my room after breakfast at my request and I had a confidential talk with her. There was something very unlooked for and almost unaccountable. I slept badly last night and was awake a good part of the time with anxieties and doubts and indecision. I came to one conclusion after breakfast and am glad I acted on it in consulting Lucy. I wrote to Mr. Sawyer and to Lang and a short note to Miss Durfee who sent me the pay for my picture "The Year Smiles" nine hundred dollars less commission ten percent, ninety dollars.
