want to keep one of them and would return the others. Arranged my pictures so as to be able to send them to the different exhibitions. The Academy closes today. I was not able to attend the Annual meeting. I understood Arthur Parton and Thos. Moran were made Academicians  Neither of my two would haven been sold. There has been great disturbance in Wall St, failures, panic and defalcations. The Grant-Ward failure has created great disturbances. I think Suney has failed also. Came home by the 4.30 train. Ordered a carriage which came ten minutes late and I came near being left. Sam Coykendall, his wife and two children came up. At the junction they went into the drawing room car and he insisted on my coming with them.

May 18" 1884. The apple blossoms on the hill are about at their best. I made a sketch in the forenoon but it was not very satisfactory. Joe and Gertrude are going home to Hillsboro tomorrow and Mary and Marion to New York. It will be very lonely here and I dread it. Luckily we are busy with our papering and painting.  I wish I had nothing to do but paint from nature every day. In New York I talked with Julia about her wedding.  She thinks she will not be married here now but I told her we wished her to be.

Monday [[strikethrough]] 20 [[/strikethrough]] 19. Joe and Gertrude left for Hillsboro today. I drove them down to the 7.25 ferry boat. Their going home without dear Gussie will be very sad. Mary and Marion went by the 11.45 West Shore train. I drove them up and my father went along. Have been at work getting the paper off the sitting room preparatory to having it papered and painted. A letter from Eastman Johnson and a note from Miss. Nesmeth. Sara had a letter from Mrs. Odell hinting at some great trouble in their family. They have to give up their home and she did not say why. Sara also received a despairing letter from Laura.

Tuesday 20  Have been helping Sara with the work about the house. The man finished the papering of the sitting room tonight. Tomorrow he will put up the moulding and the border in the parlor and all will be done. The painter will probably be a day longer. A letter from Weir wanting me to come to New Haven and speaking of our loss in very sympathetic terms. Cousin Rachel came tonight.

Wednesday 21. My father went with me to Benjamins where I got the plants for the cemetery and we drove over there and I set them out. Petunias on Gertrudes grave, pansies on my mothers, Balsam on Nannies, Lobelia gracilus on James, Pinks on my grandmothers. I did not finish them all intending to go after dinner. At dinner John McEntee sent up to ask me to go fishing with him over in Duchess Co. Sara and my father urged me to go and I made my preparations hurriedly and we went by the 3.30 boat and down to Rock City, where we spent the night. The apple blossoms were all out and the ride was charming.

Thursday 22. We had our breakfast at 6. The Landlord of the little hotel went with us and we fished two miles of the Saw Kill a rather pleasant stream. Had some difficulty about fishing over B. T. Sheldens farm but I saw him and he permitted us to fish. At about 2' oclock our wagon met us and we drove back to the hotel, had our dinner and drove down to Rhinebeck and came over on the 6.16 boat. We had 17 trout and had a charming trip. Johns engineer was caught in a belt Tuesday had his arm
