directions about packing Sam's picture and sending it to me. Today I put the copy of the Brighton picture I made in the frame, packed the other and brought it down with me to have a new frame made before I send it to the Players. Went down to see John McEntee last night, who has just returned from Canada and after I got home wrote to Lucy. Today has been bright and keen. After doing unmemorable things I came away by the 5:30 ferry boat and came down via H.R. arriving here about 10.

Wednesday Jan. 16" 1889. This morning I bought a new travelling log and two pairs of shoes and also a hat for Dwight which I had sent by Express. While I was at Cammeyers trying my shoes Lieut. Stamper who belongs to Andrews regiment and whom I last saw at Fort Bridger came in and sat down beside me. He was surprised to see me. Was just about leaving for Washington where he is with his wife on leave. Have painted on my picture of birches all day and improved it. Agnes and Bonyer dined with us and after dinner we all played poker. It rained when I went over to my dinner

Thursday 17. It has rained most of the day and cleared toward evening with a cold wave close at hand. When I came from breakfast I found a letter from Mr. Welles enclosing his check for $500 and expressing his entire satisfaction with the picture I wrote him at once. He wants my photograph and also one of my father & Mother. I packed and sent to his two daughters two of my little pictures in frames - Winter looking down from home on the river and "Sunset" looking toward Olive Mt. They went by express today. I have been running about doing all sorts of errands most of the day and have painted but little. I went at my picture of "Clouds" to see what I could do towards obliterating the cracks and succeeded very well, which is some thing I have been dreading to undertake. This evening I went up to Joe Cornells to call and to see about his picture for Paris. They have agreed to let me have it. It looked well to me tonight as far as I could see it. I have now secured Sam Coykendalls picture, Joes, Wm. P. Eno's and I hope to have Clarks When I came to my room I found a letter from Sara and I wrote to her and mailed it after 11 o'clock.

Friday 18" Painted on several of my pictures but did not accomplish much. I wrote to Bailey and to Robt Wilkinson and also to Wm. P. Eno about pictures, also to Fred Norton about loaning his cliff picture to Joe Cornell. I meant to call on the Churchs and the Bannings this evening but Downing and Sedgwick wanted to go to see Dockstaders Minstrels and I went with them. We were egregiously "sold." Instead of Dockstader there was a sort of a strolling company who went through a lot of the most wearisome trash. After the play I went around to the Players. There was but one man there and I didnt know him. I looked about, had some oysters and beer and went up into the luxurious library and wrote a note to Sara. It is a most elegant and comfortable place and I feel like going oftener to get familiar with it.

Saturday 19" Ordered a pair of pantaloons at Carters after looking in vain for some thing I wanted at Rogers & Peets yesterday. Came to my room and began a little sunset on the plains with
