river of Katahdin. We reached Abol about 4 and immediately went into camp. At [Poihnockamos?] we met a party coming down Mr. Hinckley and his wife, Dr. Simmons and a Mrs. Smith all from Bangor with Charlie Hale and another man and three Indians 4 canoes and a bateau with the camp & luggage. They had been in about three weeks and were on their way out

Sunday 13" Found the river had risen two feet during the night which was cold and frosty. Leaves falling rapidly. A young man and his Indian guide, Ketcham passed down early with a deers head and horns to send out with the Bangor party. I would have staid a day longer but found we had not brought provisions for a longer time, so we had an early start on our return. Just below Debsconeag stopped at the Bangor party's camp. Their men had four or five fine Togue spread out on a log. (Lake trout) one of the ladies caught one of them weighing 12 pounds in Debsconeag pond with a troll, about 75 or 100 ft. with a spoon. Gave Charlie Hale my letters to mail. We turned into Debsconag pond a beautiful clear sheet. Just off the river through a short thoroughfare and trolled for an hour or more but the wind blew from the S.E. and the river had sent in its red water and we got nothing. Stopped and cooked our dinner and came on down. I made a sketch at Abol Falls. Got back to camp about 5.

Monday 14. Up early and Johnson and I with Fred and Alvah started at 7.30 for Debsconeag Pond to troll. river high. Wind blew some and cold. [[strikethrough]] Trolled [[/strikethrough]] Met Bangor party on [[Passaganmich?]] camp. Trolled all over the lake and went clear to the end where a clear brook came in among big rooks. Had our dinner under the high bluff on the N. Side. Trolled until 4. Lake became perectly calm but we caught nothing the rise in the river having disturbed them. Came back. Came down [[C?]] Falls on left side of island and found very wild water. Our canvas shipped a good deal of water and I feared we would be swamped. We all got wet.
