humble home, said he had got it nearly paid for and meant to fix it up inside soon. Said he thought his folks were washing, but I told him I did not expect to see him living like a millionaire and that I knew what "wash-day was. I found his wife taking dinner alone the daughter, about 16 being out at the barn. She came in however. Mrs. Reed wanted me to go into the little sitting room. I found it [[cut off word]] and unfinished but neat and tidy in every respect as I was sure it would be. He has a very comfortable and pleasant little home, some good land and I think is about as happy as the most of the world. We reached Mattawamkeag after a delightful sail of 2 3/4 hours 12 miles. A part of the way it was chilly and windy but the sun shone, the wind quieted and we greatly enjoyed the trip. We got a team to take our things to the express office, had dinner for all four of us when Royal started to pole his canoe back home. I paid them each $52.50 for 21 days and we gave them all the provisions & camp equipage we had left and they seemed well pleased. Alvas wife drove down for him and they went to [[cut off word]] We left at 4:38 P.M. for Bangor where we got an excellent supper at the R.R. restaurant and got into the sleeper having telegraphed for lower berths from Matta.

Wednesday 23. We arrived at 6:20 fare $7.65 sleeper $2.00 and went directly to Youngs hotel where we had a good breakfast. Eastman left by the 8:30 train B&A for N.Y. and I went to College Hill. I met Mr. Sawyer at the station on his way to Lynn to the Universalist convention to be gone until Friday evening. He did not think we could go to Reading before Monday and so I gave up the trip, particularly as Mrs. Sawyer thought it too cold for him to go away from home. I found Gertrudes Aunt Emily (Mrs. Pierce) there and was glad to see her as I had never met her before. She is about 80 and is a gentle, sweet person. She lives in Alton, Ill. and knows Mr. Taylor.
