But as to his age. - Frankly I cans say definitely. He seemed to me the perennial Irish gentleman whom "age cannot wither" and so what matters it how old he was?

Now just here it occurs to me that possibly Mr. Cross in his instructions to me may have referred to the characteristics of his time. Well then why didnt he say so? When you speak about a mans age you generally feel yourself let loose, as it were, to thrash about promiscuously unmindful of what you hit. Now if O'Connell had been a lady - (but I dont quite see how he could have been and still be O'Connell, and especially Daniel O'Connell)- but supposing he could. I would have been more careful to get clearer instructions from Mr. Cross before I "started in" (as they say out West) For if there is one thing I endeavor to approach reverently and with a due sense of the vanity of things in general it is the lady's age - the age of the lady - the probable age of the lady. Dont speak of it- Dont think of it (if you can think of any thing else - and generally you cant).

If Mr. Cross really meant his time - O'Connells time of course, what I have said heretofore is quite irrelevant, if any of you are expecting any ideas from my speculations or suggestions or my researches in the Encyclopedia.
