Marys to breakfast. Clara Baker was there. She and Marion had been to a reception at Mrs. Stoddards last night to which I was invited. I regret I was not here to go for I would have met many old friends whom I never see now. After breakfast went up to the Academy and saw Galt. He talked quite in a discouraging vein. Met Shulliff there. Says he cant go into the country until he gets some money. I don't see how artists live who depend on their art. I went from the Academy over to Rubechs to see the figure of the sailor for the Ulster Co. monument. It looked very well and I have written to Sharpe giving it my approval. I went up to Dr. Patchens in the afternoon to return the two books he lent me and also to report on my progress. I have felt very weak of late but I am inclined to think I have caught cold as my muscles are stiff and sore. He said that from all my symptoms he would suspect heart trouble but that he could discover no trace of it nor any trouble with my lungs, and still thinks I am likely to recover. Dr. Taylor was there having returned from Mexico earlier than he intended on account of the sudden death of the landlord of his hotel. When I returned I found under my door the card of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Crawford. I had a very nice note from him which I found on my return from home Wednesday saying they would call again this week. Spent the evening at Marys and Downing and I walked over together. Tomorrow I shall begin to pack my things and arrange my room to leave it.

Friday Apl. 18" 1890. Went to Saronys this morning to see the bust of Forest I promised to go and see long ago. I cant imagine he ever looked like it. Then I walked clear down to Rand & McNallys below Canal St. to get a map of Mexico and its enviorns but they had no such thing. Stopped at Rogers & Peets and bought a pair of shoes - went over to 4' Av. and got some Pears Soap and up to 32" st for tooth brushes and tooth powder and to my studio. Casilear and I went out to lunch together. He told me Mrs. Shaw, Mrs. Winters sister had been to him last Nov. for money to pay Mrs. Winters board at the asylum and that he gave her $25. I was astonished as John Johnston agreed to attend to her for the rest of her life, in Jan 20" 1888. I went to see J. G. Brown and he said they, Mrs. Shaw and her son had been paying this ever since that time except $65. which Johnston left with him at the time he assumed charge of her case. We decided to call on Mrs. J. B. Johnston who had written me this winter about Mrs. Winter and has assured me she would find out about her. She sent word that she could not see us but her daughter, the eldest, came in and we stated the case to her and recommended them to see to Mrs. Winter as John had promised. It remains to be seen whether they will do it. It is surprising how some people forget their promises. I have been taking down curtains and putting things away and packing my trunk to leave tomorrow.

Saturday 19" Finished my packing and covering the things in my room to leave for the summer. The Expressman did not come for my baggage and I rushed around to see him as I got in the car to go to the train. He said he would get my trunk there in time but I did not think he would. At the last moment I arranged with the baggage man to forward it by next train. Just then the express man drove up but the baggage man said he could not get it on this train and that I must hurry or I would be left as the boat was two minutes late, so I hurried on board and met Joe Cornell and his wife and youngest son and while I was talking with them the baggage man came bringing me my check. It was a cold almost wintry morning and the wind blew from the North. Calvert and Downing went to see a man at Rhinebeck and they came over and staid with us over one night. I came away from N.Y. feeling that I had made little impression as an artist on
