New York 17th October 1878

Dear Mr. McEntee
I had expected to be with those who will gather to-day to follow the body of Gertrude to its last earthly home. Circumstances beyond my control prevent but my thoughts are with you and I cannot let the day pass without sending to you the assurance of my deep sympathy with you in your great bereavement in the loss of your dear wife, a woman of such rare excellence of head and heart, so kind. so affectionate, so gracious, so intelligent and vivacious. The light of her home and the enlivener of every social gathering. Pray accept my sympathy and affectionate regards.
Yours very truly,
Andrew Boardman
