#33 Ferry Avenue,
Detroit, Mich., October 13th, 1904.

Beverly Chew, Esq.,
Chairman, Committee on Arrangements,
Grolier Club,
29 East 32nd St., New York.

Dear Sir:-

I have your letter dated October 15th, requesting me to forward the Etchings by Mr. Whistler, which, some months ago, I promised to lend for the Second Grolier Club Exhibition.

Since the time my promise was given, the Council of the Grolier Club issued a circular, proposing to publish photographic reproductions of all of Mr. Whistler's Etchings and Dry-points in all known states, so far as possible. Being in full sympathy with the well know opposition so frequently expressed by Mr. Whistler during the later years of his life, concerning reproductions of his Etchings, and with the protest of Miss. Birnie-Philip, the Executrix of Mr. Whistler's will, against the proposed action of the Council, I must decline to send the Prints asked for, unless I am assured by your Committee that no photographs or copies of any kind will be made from them. If you will furnish me with such assurances, I will forward the Prints promptly, as originally intended.
