Sir,
Your petitioner John J. Harris a resident citizen of the town of Palestine, county of Anderson, State of Texas would respectfully complain and represent the following to wit, 

I, John J. Harris hired the services of one John Cartwright (Freedman) for the year 1867. at the same rates he had been hired by myself, for the year 1866. which contract was drawn up in writing, and stipulated the sum of one hundred and two dollars to be paid in currency. The contract of the year 1867. was not in writing, but verbal, which contract can be proven. 

On the 25th Dec. A.D. 1867. I settled with John Cartwright, and in the settlement the sum of thirty nine 25/100 dollars was still due him, for which I give him my note. On the 9th Jan. A.D. 1868 John H. Morrison, Sub. Asst. Com. Bureau R.F.A.L. Military District, with head quarters at Palestine Texas, commanded me in writing to pay said John Cartwright (Freedman) the sum due on said note, which I did promptly; the said note was paid in United States legal tender. The said John Cartwright (Freedman) soon returned to me, with this money,-- stating, that said John H. Morrison
