Dear Sir

Yours of the 14th was duly received I assure you I need all your sympathy in relation to my leave.  I did suppose "virtue would be rewarded," I thought that seven years of confirmed service was sufficient grounds on which to make such a request.  I could have made a sick leave, good ground as any Dr would grant a certificate.  Dr. Norton, Lane, or Luke, or all three would certify that I am today unfitted for duty by ill health, and a change is necessary.  I was at the point of death last year during May and June and made an application with a Surgeons Certificate and it was returned disapproved by Kirkman, Gen Griffin did not see it.
