I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated Aug 12th

I have no personal knowledge of the various acts of lawless men during July, except such as were reported. Various reports came indirectly but I only report such cases as I have sufficient cause to believe to be true.

There were rumors of six murders in Red River and Titus counties one white man and five negroes during July, but during that time I was on the limits of the square and until my escape could go no further than to my meals and return.

The prison was visited daily by long haired strangers heavily armed, hence my inability to investigate the rumors of murder
