Austin

Sir:
I have the honor to report that on Tuesday Dec 10th I received the information that a freedman named John Chaney had been killed the night before, at his home in the Little River settlement, twelve miles from Belton. I left Belton immediately with my whole command (three men) to investigate the murder.

On my way to the scene of the murder I called at the residence of one C. C. Clark, with the intention of arresting him, he being suspected of being the murderer, but was unable to find him. I then proceeded to Mr. Chattin's plantation with whom the freedman was living when killed, and remained there all night returning to Belton in the morning

While at Mr. Chattins plantation
