James Johnson. freedman. being duly sworn deposes and says: "Mr. B.T. Webb. beat Tom Ellis, freedman, and took his pistol away and sold it. This was about a week before Christmas. Mr. Hampton, shoemaker, beat Peter, freedman. Sunday the 23d February. The people of Dangerfield keep watch to prevent colored people coming to Col. Starr to report. The freedpeople are all the time knocked about by the white people of Dangerfield, but they dare not report it. Sam Towns beat freedwoman Ann Jenkins last week: she told me she dare not say any thing about it for fear they would kill her. Mr T. H. Turner said "I can have any negro killed I want to."
