of the white Union people.  The fact that none of the freedmen would go on his bond for $100 shows in what esteem he is held by them.  He has been living with a colord woman; this fact has naturally engendered much feeling against him.  The sherriff is in no way at fault for the arrest - Ames blames him only for the chaining.

There is no question however but there is so strong a feeling against him, that should the matter come to trial, he would get the utmost extent the law would allow, & that but for malice, there would have been no prosecution.

I would therefore respectfully recommend that the case rest where it is till about the time of trial - & then that the prosecuting atty. be directed to enter a nolle prosequi.

I cannot recommend Mr. Ames for an appointment as a school teacher
