Rebellion is re-kindled doubtless through the influence of the K.K.K., a few "dens" having been established in this County; Repeated attempts have been made, to kill and murder. Things have gone to that extent, which require a Military Force, to suppress and give protection to peaceably disposed Citizens, which they are asking at the hands of the Government, and which if not promptly given, may result in serious consequences to many of the Citizens of this County.
Enclosed I transmit respectfully an order of the K.K.K., which I found on my Office Door on the morning of the 23rd of April 1868.
I am, Lieut,
Very Respectfully
Your obedient Servant
Charles Schmidt
Sub Asst Comr
