know his occupation-  He told me that he wished to get up a writing school -  Said he had no money on friday night -  The conversation that I heard at Smiths store was in regard to getting up a writing school

Did not see him on Saturday -  Nor since he left my house until this morning in charge of officer - Do not know where he is at present boarding nor where he has boarded since leaving my house - I was at the fire on friday night - A large crowd was present at the fire when I arrived -  Suppose the fire was about 2 oclock on [[strikethrough]] friday [[/strikethrough]] saturday morning -  Did not see the prisoner at the fire -  Mrs Hoffmans house was about 40 or 50 [[strikethrough]] yds [[/strikethrough]] feet in rear of the burnt district

Testimony of John Strausburg.

I was not at the fire -  Saw the prisoner on Friday night after 11 oclock in front of Smith's bar room. Saw him again about 10 minutes afterwards in Conversation with a freedman on the corner in front of Ira Harris's -  They engaged in Conversation at this point about 10 or 15 minutes - The freedman met him on the corner, coming from the direction of the Jail.  Heard the prisoner say to the freedman "It ought to be or must be done this way"  

They walked off together towards Mr Barne's,
