Detroit, Michigan,
October 5th, 1905.

Dear Mr. Mayer:-
It was a pleasure to receive your good letter of September 23rd, and to know that you are leaving London for a few weeks. I had hoped to see you in America this Fall, but as you do not mention your destination, I fancy you are going elsewhere. Perhaps next Fall both yourself and Mrs. Mayer will be coming this way. I hope so.

Miss. Birnie-Philip has only recently returned from Germany, hence the delay in the delivery of the two paintings to come from her. In due course, you will doubtless receive word from her direct, concerning them.

I am glad you wrote me concerning the portrait of Miss. Florence Leyland. I am very careful not to repeat the price mentioned for works of art, still, without being warned, I might have spoken with some one concerning such matters.

It will perhaps interest you to know that Mr. Benedict wrote me concerning the picture from the steamer "Coronia", on his return to America. He told me in his letter that you had said to him that I had seen the picture and did not wish to add it to my own collection. He seemed to feel that he would like to secure a more representative example of Whistlers work, but wanted certain information from me, which I cheerfully gave him.
