Dear Sir:--
Replying to your valued inquiry of December 20th, I beg to say, that my interest in paintings does not include that of the early American portrait painters. In fact, the only American paintings in my collection are the work of three or four of present living men. This being the case, you will see that I cannot entertain any proposition for the purchase of the portrait you have of Ex-Governor Clinton. If I may make a suggestion it would be that you correspond with the different Museums of our country. Surely some one of them, I think, would be very glad to come into the possession of so important a work of John Van Der Lyn.
Yours very truly,
Charles L Freer
